September Meeting – Hierarchical Storage Management at the NASA Center for Climate Simulation

This month’s presentation will be provided by Nick Acks from the NASA Center for Climate Simulation.

The NASA Center for Climate Simulation (NCCS) is a High Performance
Computing center dedicated to large scale climate modeling. The models
run in the NCCS computation facilities produce a large amount of data
which has grown exponentially over time. Hierarchical Storage
Management software (HSM) is used to provide access to lower cost bulk
storage (tape, slower disk) to users so that faster storage can be
used for current compute tasks.  Silicon Graphics International’s
(SGI) Data Migration Facility (DMF) software provides an easy to use
interface for the NCCS’s users to access to data stored over the past
two decades.  In 2010 the NCCS was one of the first large sites to
implement SGI’s Parallel DMF (pDMF).  This presentation will address
the pDMF implementation and production operations experiences at the
NCCS, including lessons learned, comparisons of before and after
performance and reliability, and SGI’s support before, during, and
after the implementation.

This month’s topic should be very interesting so we encourage everybody to attend!

Note:The September meeting we will be the first meeting at OmniTI’s new office location which is in the Maple Lawn area of Fulton, just off MD-216, west of US-29. The office is in a set of buildings behind Harris Teeter, in the second building. The address and a link to the map is provided below:
